Arabic music is a blend of the music of the Arabs in the Peninsula of the arabs and the music of all the peoples who were conquered by the Muslim Arab invaders. It has also been influenced by Ancient Greek, Persian, Kurdish, Assyrian, Turkish, Indian, African (which is Berber & Swahili) and European music (which is Flamenco). Arabic music is the kind of music heard in the Arabic countries from the Gulf to the Maghreb.
Arabic music includes several genres and styles ranging from classical to pop music and from secular to sacred music. The development of Arabic music has deep roots in Arabic poetry which go back to the pre-Islamic period known as Jahiliyyah. Music during those days played an important role in cultivating the mystique of exorcists and magicians. Singing was not the work of intellectuals and was instead entrusted to women with beautiful voices (i.e. Al-Khansa). These women would also learn how to play some instruments used in those days like the lute, drum, Oud, rebab, etc and then sing the songs respecting the poetic metre. Among the notable songs of that period were the "huda" from which the ghina' derived, the nasb, sanad. The Ghazal which is the most melodious love song was invented by the Arabs and is popular till date.
Much of Arabic music emphasizes on melody and rhythm, as opposed to harmony.
Typically, Arabic music is homophonic but there are some genres of Arabic music that are polyphonic.
In Arabic music, a maqam (plural maqamat) is a set of notes with traditions that define relationships between them, habitual patterns, and their melodic development. The maqam consists of at least two jins, or scale segments. The main difference between the Western chromatic scale and the Arabic scales is the existence of many in-between notes, which are sometimes referred to as quarter tones, to make matters simple.
